There are three variations of the rental scam, and all are very successful. In one, the victim advertises a room or home rental. They will be contacted by an eager tenant from another country that needs to relocate for school or work.
Sometimes they claim to be renting the room for a relative, friend, or client.
They will then send money orders or cashiers checks for more money than is required to rent the property, and instruct you to send the extra money via Western Union to a shipping company, travel agent or furniture store prior to their arrival.
In the second, the scammer posts an ad for a rental property with a price that catches the eye as being really cheap. They will request a deposit prior to sending the keys to the would-be renter; obviously they keep your money and you get nothing in return.
The third is unique; the scammer advertises a free home to anyone that will assist them in running their business. They need you to cash checks for them while they are out of the country and wire them the money.
They will request that you do this once or twice as a "test run" prior to them sending you the keys and contract for the property to "establish trust" before appointing you as the official "collector" of money owed to them by vendors.
All three scams result in you sending them money and them vanishing into thin air.
